Biography
Born in Boulder, Colorado in 1972, Daniel Domenico attended Georgetown University from 1992 to 1995 and graduated with a B.A. in 1995. He attended the University of Virginia School of Law from 1997 to 2000 and received a J.D. in 2000.
Legal Experience
Domenico currently serves as Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado. He was confirmed as a federal judge for this seat in 2019.
After law school graduation in 2000, Domenico worked as an associate at Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) out of their Denver and Boulder offices. In 2003, he clerked for Judge Tymkovich. When his clerkship ended in 2004, Domenico worked briefly for now-U.S. Senator John Thune’s campaign in South Dakota. This work consisted of working with local and national counsel on compliance matters, election-day preparation, and litigation.
Between 2005 and 2006, he helped advise the Secretary of the Interior and other department officials on a wide range of legal matters as Special Assistant to the Solicitor at the Department of the Interior. These included federal lands questions for the Bureau of Land Management, Endangered Species Act matters, oil and gas, water law and policy, national monuments, and Indian affairs. He also worked with the Department of Justice on various matters in litigation.
In 2006, Domenico returned to Colorado to become Solicitor General, where he oversaw major litigation for the state, its officers, and agencies. He argued multiple cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, Tenth Circuit, Colorado Supreme Court, and trial courts. He also served as the Attorney General’s designee to the Colorado Title Setting Board, which reviews proposed citizen initiatives and drafts the language describing the initiatives appearing on official ballots.
After leaving the Attorney General’s office in 2015, he founded Kittredge LLC, where he worked until his confirmation to the district court in 2019.
