AFJ Law

Protecting Advocacy. Powering Impact.

The movement needs more than defense. It needs the power to move forward.

AFJ Law provides pro bono legal counsel to advocacy organizations facing unprecedented threats – helping to strengthen their infrastructure to protect operations and deepen impact. Many organizations operate under a paralyzing myth: that speaking up means becoming a target, and that silence means safety. Neither is true – but believing either has a very real cost.

About the Program

AFJ Law’s advice is rooted in our clients’ missions – we focus on finding solutions while managing risk at every step. As a project of Alliance for Justice, AFJ Law draws on the expertise of Bolder Advocacy, one of the leading authorities on nonprofit advocacy law.

We approach compliance with the full scope of advocacy in mind – not just governance and internal documents, but how the rules shape everything from communications to lobbying to civic engagement. Our work protects organizations from the inside out while zealously building power and advancing their missions.

AFJ Law is currently serving 501(c)(3) organizations based in DC with budgets under $5 million and will be expanding to Texas in the coming months. We will update this information as the program expands to other jurisdictions.

AFJ Law’s services focus on nonprofit advocacy-related legal matters and do not extend to general organizational counsel, employment law, HR matters, or campaign management.

We start with the mission – not the limitations.

AFJ Law helps organizations understand and manage legal risk without losing sight of what they are trying to accomplish.

Why Now?

The stakes for advocacy organizations have changed. Organizations are navigating growing legal uncertainty, political scrutiny, and unprecedented threats — at the same time their voices and advocacy are needed most.

There’s a paralyzing myth:

Speaking up makes you a target. Staying silent keeps you safe.

Neither is true.

But believing either can have a very real cost. AFJ Law was built for this moment.
