The Los Angeles Black Worker Center (LABWC) is leading a powerful movement tackling systemic employment barriers that have disproportionately limited access to quality jobs and economic opportunity for Blac

k workers in Los Angeles. As a grassroots nonprofit rooted in community organizing, policy advocacy, and worker leadership, LABWC works to ensure Black workers not only survive the jobs crisis but thrive in equitable, dignified careers.

Despite representing a smaller portion of the region’s population, Black workers in Los Angeles County continue to face disproportionately high unemployment and underemployment, with many concentrated in low-wage industries and locked out of quality career opportunities. LABWC confronts these disparities by building collective power, expanding professional pathways, shifting public narratives, and advocating for structural policy change that advances workplace equity.

Through programs like Ready 2 Work, which provides career readiness training and mentorship, and the 1000 Strong campaign — a coalition effort focused on creating pathways to high-quality employment — LABWC is placing Black workers on meaningful career trajectories while calling on government and industry partners to uphold fair practices because Black workers have been essential to Los Angeles’ economic heartbeat for generations, yet they’ve too often been denied access to careers that offer stability, dignity, and growth.

Since its founding, LABWC has been instrumental in winning policy reforms and creating resources that benefit Black workers and their communities. From advocacy for local enforcement of anti-discrimination protections to partnerships that expand workforce development, LABWC’s approach integrates immediate support with long-term solutions.
