Louisiana Groups Oppose Judicial Nominee Will Crain
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 18, 2025 – This week, a group of advocacy organizations based in Louisiana voiced their opposition to William “Will” Jerrol Crain, President Trump’s nominee to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. The Senate Judiciary Committee is expected to hold a vote on his nomination this Thursday. Crain’s record on the Louisiana Supreme Court provides ample evidence that he has disturbing, extremist views that readily impact how he rules from the bench.
A prominent aspect of these views is a draconian approach to criminal cases, in which he almost universally sides with the prosecution. In case after case about the rights of defendants, Crain has dissented from the rest of the justices, expressing a willingness to dismiss any of the protections that would ensure a just and fair process. This includes ignoring laws that account for defendants’ medical concerns, concerns about ineffective counsel, and efforts to correct illegal sentences.
Crain also harbors an extreme opposition to abortion rights. In a case about a challenge to Louisiana’s “trigger” ban, Crain wrote that “terminating alleged life during the period of the temporary restraining order is irreparable,” suggesting not only that he believes life begins at conception but that he would impose that belief through his power as a judge.
“We are concerned he will not serve the people of Louisiana,” the groups write, “but would instead use the bench to further an extreme right-wing agenda that does not uphold the rule of law, sides of corporations of everyday people, and cuts off their civil liberties. As organizations based in Louisiana, which will be directly impacted by this nomination, we hope that you will keep our concerns in mind as you deliberate on whether to confirm William Crain to a lifetime seat on the Eastern District of Louisiana.”
The groups who signed are:
- 10,000 Women Louisiana
- Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center
- Louisiana Center for Children’s Rights
- Promise of Justice Initiative
