Alliance for Justice Calls for Courage and Vigilance
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 20, 2025 – Today marks the inauguration of Donald Trump’s second term as president of the United States.
Alliance for Justice Interim Co-President Keith Thirion issued the following statement:
“Today is a dark day for the United States as we swear into office a president who has been convicted of corruption and who incited a violent insurrection. The damage of Donald Trump’s first term can be measured in lives ruined and even lost, serving as a chilling preview of the years ahead. From enacting the Muslim ban and family separation policy to appointing justices that would overturn Roe to suggesting the injection of bleach to treat COVID, no community was spared in Trump’s first term — except the billionaires, corporations, and loyalists he favored. Already, he has promised to deliver even more extremism in his second term.
“However, we have also seen the power we can build when our communities join together to respond. How we fight matters. The benefits of the doubt have already been given and expired. This is the moment for vigilance in defense of our civil and human rights, our health and safety, the sanctity of the rule of law, and the fate of our democracy.
“Alliance for Justice will lead the charge to stop the zealots Trump will nominate to our courts. Every day, we see the harm his judges have wrought on our people, and we will do everything we can to keep more Trump judges off the bench. We call upon Senate Democrats and the people of this nation to join us in holding back these extremists.
“As ever, we will also be at the vanguard of defending the rights of the people to advocate for their communities and our democracy through nonprofits and foundations. We already saw the House try to advance the ‘Kill Nonprofits Bill’ last fall, which would make it easier for the Trump administration to target organizations he dislikes. We should not take lightly the very real threats Trump has made to those who oppose him and the vengeance he has promised on those he deems his enemies.
“We know what the attacks will be and we know what we stand to lose, and we will resist today to build a better tomorrow. That work begins now.”
