Alliance for Justice (AFJ) applauds Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs for her outstanding appointments of Sheena Chiang and Alex Samuels to Division One of the Arizona Court of Appeals. These two exceptionally qualified attorneys bring a remarkable breadth of legal experience, a demonstrated commitment to public service, and perspectives that will strengthen Arizona’s judiciary for years to come.

“This is a moment to celebrate for Arizona and for everyone who believes in a justice system that truly serves all people,” said AFJ President Rachel Rossi. “Chiang is a trailblazer whose appointment makes history. As the first South Asian American and first Asian American woman to serve on Arizona’s appellate courts, she is breaking barriers and opening doors for future generations. Her more than 15 years defending people whose lives and liberty are on the line will bring an invaluable perspective that is rare on state appellate courts. Samuels is an exceptionally accomplished appellate attorney whose work at the highest levels of our legal system — combined with his experience working alongside Arizona’s tribal nations — demonstrates the depth of knowledge and commitment to public service that our courts deserve.”

AFJ is proud to celebrate these appointments. Through our Building the Bench program, we have long pushed for a judiciary that reflects the full range of the legal profession, including public defenders and lawyers who have represented those our legal system too often overlooks.

These are precisely the kinds of outstanding legal minds and dedicated public servants we need on our courts. Excellence on the bench comes from a diversity of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. AFJ congratulates the people of Arizona on these exceptional selections and looks forward to the contributions both will make to justice in Arizona.
