WASHINGTON, D.C., April 7, 2023 – Today, U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk issued a stay blocking the FDA’s 23-year-old approval of mifepristone, an abortion medication that has been available for more than 20 years and that is used in more than half of all abortions in the United States. This ruling matches up exactly with Kacsmaryk’s history of extremism, including a career of advocating against legal abortion.

Alliance for Justice President Rakim H.D. Brooks issued the following statement:

“It was only nine months ago that Justice Alito tried to convince us the Supreme Court wasn’t banning abortion nationwide. No one believed abortion opponents would stop there, and today we face the latest attack on our freedoms by a captured court system. We can’t call ourselves a constitutional democracy when our judiciary is constantly rolling back people’s rights on a political whim. This is just the latest demonstration that our courts require serious reform and that we must fill every judicial vacancy with fair-minded judges actually committed to equality and the rule of law. We simply can’t tolerate a generation of Trump-appointed judges unraveling our constitutional freedoms without consequence.”
