First Judicial Nominees Deserve Swift Confirmation By Full Senate

WASHINGTON, D.C., May 20, 2021 – Today the Senate Judiciary Committee held bipartisan votes to advance the confirmations of several of President Biden’s first judicial nominees, including Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the D.C. Circuit, Candace Jackson-Akiwumi to the Seventh Circuit, Julian Neals and Judge Zahid N. Quraishi to the District of New Jersey and Regina Rodriguez to the District of Colorado. These well-qualified nominees now advance to the Senate floor for their final confirmation.

Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“It’s clear that these nominees are eminently qualified and deserve to be swiftly confirmed. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson and Candace Jackson-Akiwumi in particular will serve our courts of appeal ably, and they all bring diverse experiences that our courts so desperately need. It’s also worth noting that Jackson-Akiwumi will become the only person of color serving on the Seventh Circuit. We likewise need more public defenders on the bench who can appreciate the experiences of the accused.

“The Republican senators who chose to vote against these nominees did so for purely partisan reasons in a failed attempt to delay their confirmations. We hope the rest of their colleagues in the full Senate think better of resorting to such petty attacks on these jurists’ reputations.”
