Kavanaugh Hearing Announced Amid “Outrageous” Review Process

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 10, 2018 – Following today’s announcement that Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has scheduled a confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh beginning on September 4, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement of a hearing for Brett Kavanaugh, which Chairman Grassley now wants to hold well before the National Archives has a chance to review and release all the Kavanaugh records that Grassley himself asked for, is jaw-dropping. It means that the Chairman is telling the American people that this hearing is barreling forward, no matter what, no matter how little information is available to the Senate and public or how many shortcuts the Committee has to take. To make this absurd timeline possible, the Chairman is relying on a secretive and partisan process in which a team of private Republican lawyers is screening a tiny percentage of Kavanaugh’s records and calling that good enough. It’s outrageous, and no way to manage a lifetime confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court.”
