About Federal Magistrate Judges
Federal magistrate judges are appointed by the district judges of their court to handle preliminary and pretrial matters in criminal and civil cases. They may preside over civil trials with all parties’ consent and try misdemeanor cases with the defendant’s consent. Candidates are vetted by a merit selection panel of attorneys and non-attorneys from the community, and most full-time magistrate judges serve renewable eight-year terms. Recall Status
Judges marked “Recall” have retired but been called back to serve, often to address caseload needs or fill gaps while a new magistrate judge is appointed. In some cases, they may serve in a different district than their original appointment.
Retirement Eligibility
A magistrate judge qualifies for a full retirement annuity upon reaching age 65 with at least 14 years of service. Judges marked “Eligible to Retire Now” have met both thresholds. Those marked “Eligible to Retire at End of Term” will meet them before their current term expires.
