WASHINGTON, D.C., May 4, 2017 – In response to President Trump’s signing of an Executive Order that appears to pave the way for religious interests to receive preferential treatment under the tax code and potentially trump citizens’ rights, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“This Executive Order is both vague and foreboding, a dangerous mess that is most likely unconstitutional. It sends threatening signals about how certain religious speech and religious institutions might be allowed to skirt laws imposed on others, and to impinge on citizens’ rights in the future. The implications for health care are especially concerning, as it leaves the door open for care that conflicts with some religious beliefs, such as contraception, to be curtailed by providers, insurers or employers. We are deeply troubled by this assault on genuine rights and freedoms under the guise of religious ‘liberty,’ even as this EO raises more questions than it answers.”
