Trump Documents Case Dismissal is Judicial Overreach
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 15, 2024 – Today Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the classified documents case against former president Donald Trump, saying the appointment of the special counsel was unconstitutional. The decision goes against 50 years of precedence upholding the legality of how special counsels are selected dating back to the Watergate scandal. The decision is expected to be appealed. Judge Cannon has already been overturned by the 11th Circuit once regarding this case back in 2022.
Alliance for Justice President Rakim H.D. Brooks issued the following statement:
“Judge Cannon is doing the constitutional dirty work of the conservative movement. Countless judges and courts have reaffirmed the constitutionality of special counsels for more than three decades. Yet, Justice Thomas—alone—called into question the special counsel’s legitimacy in the recent presidential immunity case. Judge Cannon obviously heed that call and, so, here we are: A president can only be prosecuted in the narrowest of circumstances, assuming you can find anyone authorized to prosecute him. That is a constitutional dystopia.
“Judge Cannon has done immeasurable harm to our constitutional order with this decision. Judges are supposed to interpret the law, not obliterate it because of political bias. It’s outrageous what has happened to the rule of law in just two weeks. We deserve far better.”
