NOLA.com: A Louisiana justice nominated by Trump is drawing fire. Deservedly, so.
This excerpt is from a piece that originally ran on October 21, 2025.
William C. Snowden, a law professor at the Loyola University New Orleans College of Law, told me that there is a deep concern about elevating Crain to a lifetime federal judicial role “because of his record on the bench” and because he has frequently mixed his “personal beliefs and values” with the law.
In a social media post attributed to the president, Trump said Crain “has proven he has the Wisdom and Courage required to put our Constitution, FIRST. Now, more than ever, we need Judges who will hold violent criminals accountable, enforce the Rule of Law, and protect our Inalienable rights.”
Snowden said Trump’s “glowing endorsement” is obviously intended “to upset the people they want to upset,” those who work for a more even-handed and just judicial system.
Christine Chen Zinner, the federal research and advocacy director with the Alliance for Justice, said since most cases don’t make it to the U.S. Supreme Court, it’s important which federal justices are deciding the cases the high court doesn’t hear. The Alliance is interested in “fair-minded” federal judges, not those with “extreme views” like Crain.
