RACHEL ROSSI: We depend on courts to be independent and to be fair arbiters of justice, and if we can’t depend on our courts, then where are we as a country? If we can’t count on the independence of the judiciary as a really critical check and balance on the executive, on the president of the United States, then the question becomes: Where is our democracy? If the president can do whatever the president wants and the courts cannot stop him — if the president is above the law — then do we have democracy any more? I think those are the deep and troubling questions we are asking in this moment.
