Kavanaugh’s Roe Comment Is Cold Comfort

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 21, 2018 – Following reports that  Sen. Susan Collins has said Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh told her that he would view the ruling in Roe v. Wade the same way that Chief Justice John Roberts has described it, as “settled” law, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“The notion that Brett Kavanaugh agrees with John Roberts on the issue of Roe comes as cold comfort to anyone who cares about reproductive rights. Calling Roe ‘settled’ law hasn’t stopped Roberts from ruling in favor of hampering women’s efforts to obtain abortion care, including his votes in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt and in favor of fake women’s health centers in NIFLA v. Becerra.  It’s very clear that the real strategy for judges like Roberts and Kavanaugh is to chip away at Roe until its protections become meaningless, and in that context anything they say about Roe being ‘settled’ means absolutely nothing.”
