Kavanaugh Inspires “No Confidence”
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 6, 2018 – Following Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony at his confirmation hearing today, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony inspires no confidence that he would be either independent of President Trump or would uphold established legal rights for his fellow Americans. He has repeatedly declined to clarify his expansive views on presidential power, or to weigh in on Trump’s attacks on courts and our justice system. He has given evasive answers to questions about reproductive rights and his knowledge of Bush-era programs, including warrantless surveillance, that have been directly contradicted by contemporary documents revealed today by Senators and the press. In fact, those documents are strong evidence that he lied about his knowledge of ‘war on terror’ programs at his previous confirmation hearing in 2006. Those same documents put him on record using disparaging terms about racial equity programs. It has taken an outcry from Democratic Senators and the public to make even this small fraction of controversial records public, and there is no doubt that Republicans are trying so hard to conceal the rest because of the damning information they must contain. Based on the evidence so far and the serious flaws in this process, Brett Kavanaugh should not be confirmed to the Supreme Court.”
