Flipped Senate Offers Promising Future For Judges
WASHINGTON, D.C., January 6, 2021 – The immediate returns for the Georgia runoffs suggest victories for both Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff and thus Democratic control of the Senate with Vice President Kamala Harris as the tie-breaking vote. Without Republican leadership able to block votes, President Biden can move swiftly to nominate judges.
Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“Winning back the Senate is a huge victory for American democracy, especially our courts. Trump and Senate Republicans tried to takeover the courts with unqualified, ultraconservative extremists. We renew our call on the Biden administration to seize this opportunity to nominate qualified, diverse judges from all corners of the legal profession and see them confirmed. We look forward to working with the administration and the Senate to achieve this goal.
AFJ’s Building the Bench program has created a foundation to hit the ground running, identifying hundreds of diverse candidates, including many with backgrounds as civil rights lawyers and public defenders. Americans deserve judges who understand their experiences and who aren’t motivated by a partisan agenda. We are now equipped to ensure our courts uphold critical constitutional rights, liberties, and freedoms.”
