WASHINGTON, D.C., November 28, 2018 – Following today’s Senate vote to advance the nomination of Thomas Farr for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“With this vote, the majority of Republican senators are embracing a racist past that should have been dead and buried in this country. Thomas Farr has spent a career trying to disenfranchise voters of color. He has been denounced by the NAACP, the Congressional Black Caucus, and numerous African-American leaders. That this vote to advance his judicial nomination comes one day after the Senate election of a person who posed in Confederate costume and joked about hangings sends an unmistakable message that Republicans under Donald Trump are taking us backward to a terrible period in our history. There is still time to correct course on the Farr nomination: the Senate must not vote to confirm him. The American people need our senators to condemn, not enable, racism and bigotry.”
