Biden Commission Should Consider All Options For Supreme Court Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C., April 9, 2021 – Following through on his campaign promise, President Biden announced Friday the creation of a presidential commission to study Supreme Court reform. After Senate Republicans stole a Supreme Court seat from President Obama, then engaged in rank hypocrisy to confirm another of Trump’s nominees just days before the election, it’s an important opportunity to assess how best to undo the conservative takeover of the Court.

Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“With five justices appointed by presidents who lost the popular vote, it’s crucial that we consider every option for wresting back political control of the Supreme Court. President Biden’s commission demonstrates a strong commitment to studying this situation and taking action. The solutions considered must include actions that can be taken immediately, including expansion of the Court, to stave off decisions that could set back rights, freedoms, and liberties for decades to come. The time is now for serious court reform.”
