Bibas’s “High-Speed” Confirmation Exposes “Sham” Process

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 2 – Following the Senate’s vote to confirm Stephanos Bibas to a seat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“Today’s high-speed confirmation of Stephanos Bibas to one of our highest courts shows us what a sham the judicial confirmation process is becoming in the GOP-led Senate. The overriding goal of Republicans is to move these confirmations through as quickly as possible, before anyone realizes how worrisome the nominees’ records really are. Bibas has written alarming screeds calling for convicted people to be punished harshly and painfully. He has shown a woeful misunderstanding of civil rights law. He is not ready for a seat on the federal bench, but sadly he will now have one for life, and millions of people in the Third Circuit will have to live with his decisions.”
