As AG, Barr Would Be Another Trump Enabler

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 15, 2019 – Following today’s confirmation hearing for William Barr, President Trump’s nominee to be attorney general, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“William Barr did nothing today to allay fears that he would be an attorney general who would enable President Trump to continue his abuse of executive authority, while curtailing the civil and constitutional rights of Americans. Barr explicitly attacked the actions of federal courts in reining in Trump’s overreach, including the original Muslim Ban. He would not commit to following guidance of career ethics officials on whether to recuse himself from the Mueller investigation, or to publicly releasing the Mueller report. He wouldn’t commit to defending women’s reproductive rights. The last thing we need right now is another administration official who will be only too happy to advance the Trump agenda at the expense of millions of people, and we urge the Senate not to confirm William Barr.”
