Alliance for Justice Endorses New Supreme Court Term Limits Legislation
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 19, 2023 – Today Rep. Hank Johnson introduced the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act, which would establish 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices and standardize the appointment of a new justice every two years. Alliance for Justice supports the passage of this legislation, consistent with its support for other reforms to improve the ethics and accountability of the nation’s highest court.
The bill can be read HERE.
Alliance for Justice President Rakim H.D. Brooks issued the following statement:
“This out-of-control Supreme Court is daring Congress to pass ethics legislation, and it’s time to call their bluff. The Court is more politicized than ever. Justices enjoy lavish rewards from conservative billionaires and yet we’re supposed to pretend their decisions are neutral and in the public interest. Term limits are a necessary corrective to this sad state. The founders never intended that judges would serve until their dying breath. If they saw this bunch, I’m sure they’d scream, ‘Term Limits Now!’”
