AFJ Condemns Advancement of Steven Menashi’s Nomination
WASHINGTON, D.C., November 7, 2019 – Following the Senate Judiciary Committee’s party-line vote to advance the nomination of Steven Menashi to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:
“It’s disturbing to see the Senate Judiciary Committee rubber stamp a judicial nominee who is as biased and cagey as Steven Menashi. We now know that he helped craft the Department of Education’s illegal policy that financially burdened students who had already been cheated by for-profit colleges. That’s on top of his record of racist, xenophobic, anti-choice, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and his unwillingness to answer countless questions from Senators.
“We need to be able to trust our courts to protect our rights, but Senate Republicans appear to care only about their dangerous conservative agenda. Tens of thousands of Americans have already weighed in on Menashi’s nomination. We already know there is bipartisan opposition to Menashi’s nomination and we are hopeful that the full Senate will listen to their constituents and reject his confirmation.”
