AFJ commends IRS for withdrawing proposed rules on political activity by 501(c)(4) nonprofits

   WASHINGTON, D.C., May 22, 2014 – Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement today in response to the decision of the Internal Revenue Service to revise proposed rules on political activity by 501 (c)(4) nonprofit organizations:

 We are delighted that the IRS realizes it needs to go back to the drawing board.

While we appreciated the stated goal of providing greater clarity, the proposal withdrawn today vastly overreached and threatened to do serious damage to the ability of everyday Americans to have an impact on the political process.    The proposal was a club when what we really needed was a scalpel.

As the 150,000 comments indicate, there is great  interest in getting this right, and we look forward to working with the IRS to do so.
