WASHINGTON, D.C., August 14, 2023 – This weekend the world learned of the passing of Senior Judge Rosemary Pooler, who served on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit for 25 years. During her time on the bench, she fostered an incredible reputation because of her commitment to equality and justice for all.

Known for cutting to the chase of the matter, Judge Pooler wrote many important decisions and dissents defending the rights of Americans, whether it be protecting the rights of immigrants seeking new life in the United States or protecting access for individuals seeking abortions. She was a model movement judge whose service to justice will be missed.

Alliance for Justice President Rakim H.D. Brooks issued the following statement:

“As we discuss the fate of judicial nominations through the end of this presidential term, one need not look further for inspiration than the impact of Judge Rosemary Pooler. Here was a judge who had the ability to see to the heart of any case before her and who was determined to ensure that justice was preserved in her courtroom. It is not hard to imagine how differently we would trust our courts if the bench were full of judges like Judge Pooler. Alliance for Justice extends its sympathies to her family, friends, and colleagues as we join in celebrating her incredible legacy.”
