WASHINGTON, DC, March 23, 2020 – This weekend, Senate Republicans pushed for an aid package that included massive corporate bailouts with virtually no oversight, but little in the way of protections for workers across the country. There was also insufficient funding for hospitals, the development of vaccines and other treatments, and equipment to protect patients and workers alike. Democrats opposed the Republican-drafted bill, which fell far short of the 60 votes required to advance.
Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:
“Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that even in an unprecedented crisis like the coronavirus pandemic, Republicans are still focused on defending the wealthy and powerful over the needs of everyday Americans. We need a bill that protects working people, including those on the front lines of our hospitals and clinics protecting people from this deadly virus. Shame on Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans for prioritizing the health of the banks over the health of the American people.”
