WASHINGTON, D.C., May 25, 2021 – Today the Senate voted almost entirely along party lines to confirm Kristen Clarke to serve as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice. Clarke will be the first woman to oversee the division, let alone the first woman of color.

Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“It’s an historic day for justice in this country. Kristen Clarke is a stalwart advocate for civil rights, the perfect fit to oversee this important division of the Department of Justice. She will bring a strong and demonstrated commitment to equal justice as Assistant Attorney General at a time when our civil rights are under great attack.

“The votes against Clarke’s confirmation are perfect evidence of the present threat. By voting against both Clarke and Vanita Gupta en masse despite their eminent qualifications, Senate Republicans have made clear they care more about politics than civil rights. The attacks on our civil rights are coming from inside Congress, and we must guard against them at all costs.”
