What Can 501(c)(3) Nonprofits do in California State and Local Recall Elections?
California is currently holding its first gubernatorial recall election in 20 years – and voting ends on September 14. Throughout the state, there are many efforts underway to recall local officials as well. Since these elections are unique, it is critical for 501(c)(3) nonprofits, often trusted messengers in their communities, to be involved. Nonprofits can educate the public and get out the vote including through online and social media communications. Of course, 501(c)(3)s cannot support or oppose any candidates — which means they cannot weigh in on whether the elected official should be removed from office.
