Some liberals counter that the exclusion of Black women for centuries justifies an explicit decision to name one now.

“Black women have been here all along and there long since have been Black women who were qualified to hold a seat on the Supreme Court,” said Rakim Brooks, president of the left-leaning Alliance for Justice. “They were denied that opportunity because of who we were as a country, not because of who they were as jurists or as Black women,” Mr. Brooks said in a press call last week.
