WASHINGTON, DC, June 15, 2020 – In an historic ruling for LGBTQ equality, the Supreme Court ruled Monday morning that firing someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity violates Title VII protections on the basis of sex.
Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“For the first time in the country’s history, LGBTQ people in all 50 states are guaranteed the protection of the law when it comes to hiring, firing, and their terms of employment. While neither Donald Zarda nor Aimee Stephens lived to see their ultimate victories in court, their fights ensured that others will never face doubt about their protections in the workplace. This ruling throws a serious wrench in the Trump administration’s attempts to dismantle LGBTQ equality. Justice Kavanaugh’s dissent serves as a reminder that many of Trump’s judges are still committed to rolling back our civil rights. The work continues to ensure protections not only in the workplace, but in housing, public spaces, health care, and everywhere else in society.”
