FBI Probe a “Rush Job”
WASHINGTON, D.C., October 3, 2018 – Following Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s decision to file cloture on the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, indicating that the FBI has already concluded its reopened background investigation, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“From the beginning there were concerns that this FBI background check on Brett Kavanaugh would be a rush job, but this is even worse than we feared. The artificial constraints put on investigators by the White House have forced this process to a very premature conclusion. Many potential witnesses to sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh were never interviewed, including Christine Blasey Ford herself. Kavanaugh’s repeated misleading statements under oath were not investigated. It looks like this whole exercise has been for one purpose: to give political cover to Republicans who want to excuse a vote for Kavanaugh by pretending there has been a serious investigation of the assault charges. And now Mitch McConnell is moving ahead with a process that could put a deeply flawed nominee on the U.S. Supreme Court.”
