WASHINGTON, D.C., September 28, 2018  – Today Sen. Jeff Flake announced that he would join Republicans in voting to advance Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination out of the Senate Judiciary Committee, on the condition that a floor vote will be delayed pending the reopening of the FBI background check on the nominee. The Committee subsequently voted along party lines to advance the nomination. AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“Today’s turn of events is only the latest in a totally unorthodox nomination process that has been plagued by bad faith and cynical partisanship on the Republican side.  So while we welcome today’s insistence by Sen. Flake that a floor vote on Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination not take place without a reopened FBI background check, we will wait to see how seriously this investigation process is taken by Republicans and the White House. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford gave compelling testimony yesterday; Kavanaugh did not. We continue to believe that he is unfit for a lifetime seat on our nation’s highest court.”
