AFJ Applauds Senator Booker’s Call for Information on Farr
WASHINGTON, D.C., December 13 – In response to learning that Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) has sent letters to the Department of Justice and Thomas Farr, President Trump’s nominee for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, requesting more information regarding Farr’s role in the Jesse Helms campaign, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron released the following statement:
“We applaud Senator Booker’s leadership in demanding answers regarding Thomas Farr’s exact role in the Helms campaign’s attempts to suppress turnout by black voters in 1990. Farr told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he was not consulted about the Helms campaign’s decision to send intimidating postcards to black voters, yet recent news reports suggest that Farr was deeply involved in this activity. Alliance for Justice has joined more than 25 other groups asking for a new hearing for Mr. Farr so that he can answer questions about his involvement with the postcards and his previous answers to the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bottom line is this: the Senate and the American people must have all the facts and be able to properly determine not only if Mr. Farr participated in trying to suppress the votes of black North Carolinians but also if Mr. Farr misled the United States Senate.”
