AFJ Joins Call for Talley, Farr to Have New Hearings

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 17 – Following revelations that two federal district court nominees, Brett Talley of Alabama and Thomas Farr of North Carolina, may have withheld critical information from the Senate Judiciary Committee, AFJ President Nan Aron released the following statement:

“It is very disturbing to hear that anyone who aspires to be a federal judge, a position that demands the highest level of personal honesty and integrity, would attempt to mislead the Senate about his record or relevant personal information. New media reports indicate that Thomas Farr may have misled senators who questioned him about his involvement in a voter-suppression scheme in North Carolina. Brett Talley failed to report information required on the Judiciary Committee’s formal questionnaire: that he might have a conflict of interest because his wife works in the Trump White House. It is vital that the Senate Judiciary Committee call for both Farr and Talley to return to Capitol Hill to answer questions about any omissions and misrepresentations they have made. This is a test for Chairman Grassley on whether he will stand up for the Senate’s independent role and make clear that there are consequences in misleading the Senate, or whether he will continue to act as nothing more than a rubber stamp.”

Earlier this week, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund called for new hearings to be set for both Talley and Farr, based on the new information that has emerged.
