New Report Shows Judge Thapar’s Record Deserves Highest Level of Scrutiny
WASHINGTON, D.C., April 21 – Alliance for Justice today released a report on the record of Judge Amul Thapar, of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, who has been nominated by President Trump to a seat on the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. AFJ President Nan Aron issued the following statement:
“Judge Thapar is another judicial nominee drawn from the list of 21 people provided to President Trump by the Koch-funded Heritage Foundation and Federalist Society. If confirmed, he will have a lifetime seat on the Sixth Circuit and will affect the lives of millions of people in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee – and potentially nationwide. We have serious concerns about Judge Thapar’s fitness for elevation to a higher court, and hope that senators and the public will read our report and closely scrutinize his record. That record raises concerns on a number of fronts including his harsh approach to criminal justice issues, the ways he has tried to cut everyday people out of their right to a fair day in court, and his troubling approach to the issue of money in politics.”
The hearing for Judge Thapar will take place in the Senate Judiciary Committee on April 26.
