WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4, 2017 – In response to President Trump’s attack on the federal judge who issued a nationwide stay of his Executive Order restricting travel, Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement:

“President Trump, your contempt for the Constitution is showing. This totally unwarranted attack and insult aimed at a federal judge – who happens to be an appointee of George W. Bush – is just one more example of a complete disregard for the role of an independent judiciary and for the rule of law. Not only does it come fresh on the heels of the firing of acting Attorney General Sally Yates, it recalls the disrespect shown by then-candidate Trump to Judge Gonzalo Curiel, another federal judge subjected to hostility for doing his job. This latest outburst makes one thing crystal clear: more than ever, it is essential that we have a federal judiciary that is independent and will not bend to the kind of political pressure coming from this White House and this administration. And the more closely we look, the more we are convinced that Judge Neil Gorsuch, the current nominee for the Supreme Court, would fail miserably in that role.”
