WASHINGTON, D.C., August 7, 2024 – Today marks 45 years since Nan Aron founded the Alliance for Justice and initiated the progressive fight for fair courts in our nation. In that time, AFJ has played a key role in advocating for judges and justices that would uphold the rights of all and opposing those set on imposing a dangerous conservative agenda. Through recruitment of diverse movement lawyers, research on jurists’ records, and lobbying for ethical courts that uphold democracy and justice for all, AFJ has made an indelible impact on the legal system as we know it.

AFJ has also embodied the ethos of an “alliance” through its membership and Bolder Advocacy programs, uplifting the work of hundreds of other nonprofits and foundations. Through its coalition work, AFJ brings organizations together across common causes to synergize their efforts in advancing our multiracial democracy. Bolder Advocacy builds the power of these organizations and many more by helping them navigate the complexities of tax law so that they can exercise their full potential to create change. In training thousands of nonprofit staffers over the decades, AFJ’s impact can be felt in communities in all 50 states.

Alliance for Justice Interim Co-President Keith Thirion issued the following statement:

“Today Alliance for Justice celebrates its incredible growth and impact on this anniversary of our founding. The American public is engaged around the importance of our courts like at no other point in our history. President Biden has helped us transform our courts, and we are primed to reform the Supreme Court to ensure it is best serving our democratic ideals. At the same time, nonprofits across the country are coming together to advocate for our communities and speaking out with their boldest voices. AFJ is proud to stand by their side and uplift their efforts. As we approach the half-century milestone, we are as optimistic as ever about our ability to secure justice for all.”
