WASHINGTON, D.C., July 29, 2024 – Today President Biden and Vice President Harris have officially endorsed three major Supreme Court reforms: A constitutional amendment to undo the presidential immunity granted in Trump v. U.S., 18-year term limits for justices, and an enforceable Supreme Court code of conduct.

Alliance for Justice has been encouraging the Biden-Harris administration to support such reforms, including in testimony to the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court of the United States and in research on the importance of ethics reform. Year after year, the Court has abused its unchecked power to radically change the landscape for reproductive freedom, gun violence, voting rights, and the very functionality of the federal government — all while claiming even more power for itself. In the meantime, we’ve learned just how corrupt some of the conservative justices are in terms of the massive gifts they have received from their billionaire “friends.”

Alliance for Justice Interim Co-president Keith Thirion issued the following statement:

“President Biden continues to demonstrate his leadership in transforming our courts with these new Supreme Court reform efforts. The reactionary conservative super-majority that controls the Court has been acting with impunity as they accept lavish gifts from wealthy benefactors, demonstrate blatant political bias, and refuse to recuse themselves from cases in which they have a clear conflict of interest. Meanwhile, they are using their positions to turn back the clock on our rights and freedoms, ignore the threats to our planet, and claim even more power for themselves. They have repeatedly demonstrated that they are unable and unwilling to hold themselves accountable, so we must ensure there is someone to do it for them. There is no time to waste in reining in their abuses and properly checking their corruption, and we look forward to supporting the president’s efforts to do just that.”
