WASHINGTON, D.C., May 17, 2024 – Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Brown v. Board of Education ruling that concluded that school segregation is unconstitutional.

Alliance for Justice President Rakim H.D. Brooks issued the following statement:

Brown v. Board of Education fundamentally reshaped American life, declaring illegal a violent and degrading way of life that was so obviously immoral. Yet, nearly four generations later, we still have failed to achieve the promise of Brown: equal access to educational opportunity and the American Dream. Our schools are still profoundly segregated, and the Supreme Court’s ruling against affirmative action last year offers little hope of changing direction. We must do better.

“We continue to believe that movement lawyers becoming movement judges are our best opportunity to fulfill the promise of Brown. We intend to fight to fill every vacancy with advocates who Thurgood Marshall and Constance Baker Motley could be proud of. We have had great allies in President Biden, Leader Schumer, and Chair Durbin. May all of us do our best to honor Brown by placing, nominating, and confirming judges like those two icons, to whom we owe so very much.”
