There are some steps we can take to reverse this trend of waning advocacy. First, like The Center for Community Solutions, you can include advocacy in your mission statement. Approximately 70 percent of policy-engaged nonprofits have mission statements that encourage policy engagement.
Two, learn the basic rules from groups like Alliance for Justice; understand what you can and cannot do as a nonprofit.
Three, collaborate with like-minded organizations. Nonprofits in collaborative groups advocate at higher rates than those that go solo.
Finally get your clients, your patients and your members involved. Their voices are important and are too often ignored.
