Washington, D.C., November 21, 2019 – In a new column at Yeomans Work, Alliance for Justice Senior Fellow Bill Yeomans recounts last week’s Federalist Society convention. Yeomans explains that what purports to be a conservative debating society has become the “primary incubator” for not only conservative judicial nominees but administrative legal officials as well.
“Founded by a group of alienated conservative students seeking safe academic space to espouse their unpopular legal views, it has evolved into a political juggernaut that empowers Trump and threatens the legitimacy of our justice system,” Yeomans writes of the Federalist Society.
Yeomans highlights the prominent speakers and guests, including Supreme Court Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Attorney General Bill Barr. Kavanaugh was one of the event’s main headliners, but it was Barr’s remarks that particularly caught his attention.
“Barr’s speech was a disturbing mash-up of historical fantasy in service of a theory of virtually unaccountable executive power,” Yeomans explains. “Barr’s belief in this holy war with the left has combined with his belief in an executive on steroids to make him Trump’s chief enabler in dismantling norms and defying the rule of law.”
