WASHINGTON, D.C., April 22, 2014 – Alliance for Justice President Nan Aron issued the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court decision in Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action:

With this decision the Supreme Court majority has allowed the majority of those who voted in a single referendum to trample on the rights of the minority and on decades of settled law.  Affirmative Action doesn’t just benefit students for whom it helps level the playing field in the competition to get into college.  It helps all students by creating campuses that more closely resemble the richness and diversity of American society as a whole – and it helps that society, our economy, and national security by nurturing the next generation of leaders from all backgrounds.

But the majority chose to allow Michigan to deny not only the heritage of discrimination in America, but the present-day reality as well. In the wake of this decision, we need to redouble our efforts to provide every American with an equal chance at the American Dream.
