WASHINGTON, D.C., February 4, 2015: Last month’s Senate confirmation hearings showed beyond any doubt that Loretta Lynch will make an excellent attorney general, according to an analysis of those hearings and Lynch’s record released today by Alliance for Justice.

“We rarely find ourselves in agreement with the likes of Rudy Giuliani and Bill O’Reilly,” said AFJ President Nan Aron.  “But we’re glad to see them join us in praising this outstanding nominee.”

The analysis looks at the recent hearings and Lynch’s record as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

“The hearings and Ms. Lynch’s record demonstrate that she is well qualified to be the next attorney general,” the report says.  “Many senators spent the hearings attacking Attorney General Holder, but Ms. Lynch’s nomination deserves to be considered on its own merits.”

AFJ’s analysis documents Lynch’s strong record of protecting civil rights, prosecuting corporate fraud and fighting public corruption.  The analysis notes that Lynch has been aggressive in prosecuting police who violate civil rights, while also building “a strong working relationship with law enforcement officers.”

And Aron noted that, “Her top priority is indeed the most important task for the Department of Justice: protecting the right to vote in the wake of the Supreme Court decision gutting the Voting Rights Act.”

The AFJ analysis concludes that

Ms. Lynch’s confirmation hearings revealed how broad her support is. Not a single witness, even those invited by Republicans, opposed her confirmation. She has received letters of support from law enforcement officers, civil rights organizations and prosecutors. Papers such as the Denver Post, New York Post, Tampa Bay Times, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette have all called from her swift confirmation. Her strong experience and vast support is undeniable. Ms. Lynch’s nomination should not be used as a political proxy war on executive action or on Attorney General Holder. She should be considered and promptly confirmed based on her own impeccable credentials.
