On November 29, 2017, Alliance for Justice presented its Champion of Justice award to Ambassador William vanden Heuvel. More than 400 guests attended the reception and dinner celebration at 583 Park Avenue in New York City.
Ambassador vanden Heuvel is a life-long warrior for social justice who has fought on behalf of civil rights his entire career. Notably, he has worked to advance equal opportunity in education for communities of color and the rights of the incarcerated. He has represented the United States in its delegation to the United Nations, and in recent years guided the completion of a monumental project on New York City’s Roosevelt Island: the Four Freedoms Park, honoring President Franklin D. Roosevelt. And as AFJ President Nan Aron told guests at the gala dinner, Ambassador vanden Heuvel’s passion for the cause of justice only grows with the years.
Speakers at the event included Nan Aron; Roosevelt Institute Fellow and Board Chair of the Center for Community Change, Dorian Warren; author and political scientist Norm Ornstein; and Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of President Franklin Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.
