Speaker Series - New York, NY

On March 3, 2008, Alliance for Justice hosted a briefing in New York City to highlight how funders can support nonpartisan, election-related activities in 2008.  Empowering Change:  Funder Support for Election-Related Advocacy was co-sponsored by New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG), Emerging Practitioners in Philanthropy (EPIP), Funders' Committee for Civic Participation, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders in Philanthropy.

The panel of speakers—Geri Mannion, Carnegie Corporation of New York, Funders' Committee for Civic Participation Co-Chair; James Mumm and Wendoly Marte, Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition; and William Roberts, Beldon Fund—provided a wealth of information to the funders who attended.  They discussed permissible election-related activities and what foundations can do to better support these efforts in today's highly politicized environment.  The conversation centered around funding collaboratives that foundations can use to support nonpartisan election-related activities, ways election-related activity can strengthen longer-term issue work, as well as current nonprofit election-related strategies and activities in the field, such as list enhancement.
